Fluorite crystals formed 150–200 million years ago when hot water containing Fluorine and other minerals was forced up through cracks in the earth where it interacted with the calcium-rich limestone bedrock. Fluorite got its name in 1797 from the Latin word “fluere”, which means “to flow”. The earliest known uses of Fluorite come from the ancient Chinese and Egyptians, where they were used for carved into statues and amulets. It was also used in ancient Rome, where cups were carved from Fluorite with the belief that it would prevent a person from getting drunk. Egyptian people would use Fluorite to carve pearls, scarabs and GOD statues. The first description dates back to 1529 and was written by Georgius Agricola. You can find sculptures to this day dating back to the era of the builders from the Mississippi culture (900 – 1650).
