First discovered by Europeans in 1811 in the Ilimaussaq intrusive complex in Greenland, Sodalite did not become widely important as an ornamental stone until 1891 when vast deposits of fine material were discovered in Ontario, Canada where Sodalite can be referred to as “Princess blue” during the visit of two members of the British Royal Family. The stone was known across the Americas before its official entry into Western mineralogy dating back around 2600 BC.
